after 8.10 installation, can't open file directories from "Places".

Asked by sajidwasif

after upgrading to 8.10, my HP dv6000 has been giving the following problems.

1) When i go to Places--> Documents/Computer/Music or try to open any media from there, I'm always shown the "appearance preferences" window where I can change the wallpapers and stuff. Weird.... I know. How do I solve it? It never happened with 8.04

2) Totem movie player still can't play DVD. whenever insert a media, the player says, "cant read from source". Totem also gives me another problem that existed in 8.04. When I try to play an audio file from my vista drive (my other OS), the file appears on the totem playlist. But then it doesn't play. also happened with other media players.

3) After upgrading, I can't view some java required websites. Like I can't view videos from hulu.com or cbs.com. youtube works fine. This problem was solved in 8.04 when I installed some plugins. 8.10 is now so smooth. When i go to Places--> Documents/Computer/Music or try to open any media from there, I'm always shown the "appearance preferences" window where I can change the wallpapers and stuff

4) Does anyone know how I can update the avast antivirus database? So far I've only been able to run the program from terminal. But not sure how to update.

Also can anybody tell me how to rollback certain installations or is there a restore point option here? i'm kinda new with Linux. Solved only 7 or 8 issues through the terminal. I would appreciate any efforts with the problems.

Thanks
