Can't make yahoo messenger work?

I have downloaded the file from yahoo, but I don't know how to make it download into ubuntu. It says to log in as root? the file is archived and now I don't know what to do with it. I'm new to linux.

You should use Gaim ( now called: http://www.pidgin.im/ - PIGDIN)

Yahoo mess. is not the best option under linux.

How do I download Yahoo messenger and make it to work please.
