Problem with Volume Control

 I use one of the HP laptops, and there's buttons to control the volume.
I thought that the button would work, but it didn't.
I couldn't find any way to control the volume, but I don't want the sound.
What do I do???

 Please tell me the way step by step...

Have you got the volume control applet on your panel? (If not, right click on the panel and choose Add to Panel...) Does it work?
