Nautilus does not present thumbnails of some images

Asked by Oliver Elphick

When scanning new images, nautilus usually presents a thumbnail of the image. In around 10% of cases it instead presents a generic image icon. The procedure for changing that icon to a thumbnail is tedious and impracticable if there are 20 or 30 images without thumbnails in a directory of 300 images.

How can I tell nautilus to rescan the directory for thumbnails?

Why does it fail to present thumbnails of some images, when permissions etc are all the same?
