cannot play videos in vlc using 8.04 (64bit)

I can play music cds in in both my cd player and dvd player but when i try to play video discs it say cannot read source disc. do I need some more plugins or programmes

Hello

first thing is installing ubuntu-restricted-extras

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

second thing is w64codecs

sudo apt-get install w64codecs

For DVD Playback:

sudo apt-get install libdvdread3 libdvdnav4

Many tnx Bhavani,
  I loaded everything as suggested and I can now get dvd,s playing in totem movie ok, If I run VLC I lose the sound but I can probably work round that, many tnx again. John
