permissions - root issue

Asked by sharm

I'm a newbit to gOS. I set up user and gave root a pw and gave administrator privileges to root. That seems to have been a mistake in gOS.

Now I can't update, install, nothing that requires administrator rights. The sudo su command doesn't help, as I get a message you can't do that with the upgrader. Could someone please help me out with an idea?

Users and groups no longer appears. Loging in as root can't be done from the gui. I can login to the root terminal etc. but then I don't know what to try next. apt-get upgrade didn't work?????

Hi Sharm,

I am scared, your issue is not clear to me.

1. What is gOS ? Are you referring to Ubuntu ?

Ok, I consider it as Ubuntu then ...

2. What does it mean giving administrative privileges to root ? By default root has total authority.
3. Do you have any user account created while installing the Ubuntu ?

I understand as a newbie its very difficult to give a quick start , don't worry we will help you out to get familiarized.

I installed ubuntu 9.10 on my own machine which only I ever use.
How can I obtain permanent root privileges? (I love Linux already, after only 5 days!)
Thanks in advance
