Problem Installing Program

Asked by dave241151

Hi, I'm new to Ubuntu & have just downloaded the snort-2.8.2 program but am at a loss as to how to actually get it to install. Can anyone help me with this matter please. I'm used to running XP where you click on a set-up file. I've clicked on the Add/Remove section but the option to install snort-2.8.2 isn't coming up...
Thanks, Dave

not all the applications available in ubuntu are put into add/remove programs, it would be far too large then. you can install snort by going to your system menu, then administration and finally synaptic package manager. you can then do a search for 'snort' and right click on the package that is found (press mark for installation). then simply press the apply button.

you can find more info on installing applications here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware

To install snort you can use a shell (open gnome-terminal)l: sudo apt-get install snort

Also you can try synaptic. You should find it under in your menu.
