Asked by Lewis Arnold

During upgrade to 8.04 from 7.10 my screensaver frooze during cleanup. Had to manually restart. Start up revealed error- failure to initialize HAL.
Many of my applications look as if they are trying to open but nothing happens. Firefox won't initialize so I couldn't get online.

Boot Ubuntu in Recovery Mode, and then run:-
apt-get install -f
and
dpkg --configure -a

Then reboot the system with:-
reboot

See if that fixes the problems.

I made a cd of download hoping to reistall and it opened it but I couldn't figure out how to reinstall it. I clicked on anything I thought would help but so far I'm still stuck with a cute bird that won't lay any eggs :)

What happens when you use the Live CD? Does it work properly?
