How To Access Windows XP Pro Files With Ubunto 8.04 Installed With WUBI

Asked by ColTom2

How can I access Windows XP Pro files with Ubunto 8.04 installed with WUBI? I read in one posting to go to Places>Network and click on it which I have done and got no results.

I would like to be able to access Windows XP files if and when Windows boot problems ever occurred etc. Also if I can ever access Windows XP files can I copy or move then into Ubunto folders?

Thanks....as you can probably tell I am new at all this, but want to learn.

I should have been clearer about when I click on Network that I get a Windows Network icon, but when I click on it I get a blank screen.

In addition, I would like to move a lot of my Windows XP files so that Ubunto will be more functional to me without having to go back and forth to Windows XP.

Hopefully there is a solution to accessing Windows XP files with Ubunto 8.04 and RC1 update installed.

Well I finally found by updating server data that I could access MSHome from Network and view my Windows Shared Files. But I have not been able to access my Windows XP operating system files or my Windows hard drive data.

I found one website that apparently indicated that I could access my hard drive data, but I needed to know the name of my hard drive in Ubunto. I don't have a clue as how to find the name of my hard drive.

Any help in this matter will greatly be appreciated. I feel that if I can solve the accessing of these hard drive files then I am on the way to being an Ubunto user full time.

Ubuntu support reading your windows partition.

If you go to "Places" > "Computer" don't you see a something labeled as "xx GB Media"

Otherwise navigate to "/media" don't you have a folder called disk ?

Yes I see 6.4BG Media and I can click on it and open it up, but where do I go from here to view Windows files?

Thanks

I still have the question above about what to accomplish after I see the 6.4G Media in trying to access Windows Files, but now I have done something that has made me lose the ability to view MSHome when clicking on Windows Network applicable Network Servers.

I had icons on my Ubunto desktop showing Windows Shared Folders, but now they are gone. I went back to Network Servers>Windows Network to click on MSHome and try and restore these icons for shared folders. but have not been able to restore. I tried to recall what I installed with Synaptic Package Manager originally that allowed me to view MSHome etc. I ran something that apparently wiped out this capability.

I now feel as though I have progressed backwards instead of foward.

One other item that I now notice that is different from before is when I click on Windows Network in trying to access MSHome for shared folders. Previously when I clicked Windows Network this name would move up into the location block and now when I click on it "smb:///" comes up in the location.

With so many people I imagine trying Ubunto now with the WUBI installation, it would seem that there would be rather simple instructions on how to access Windows Shared Folders and hard drive data. I surely recommend this if anyone from Ubunto is monitoring these questions.

I had the Windows Shared Folders on my Ubunto desktop and now have lost them and been unable to restore. I never have been able to access my Windows operating system hard drive data,

I certainly will appreciate any and all assistance that will resolve these issues. Hopefully there is someone out there in "Ubunto Land" that can help me.

The icon appears on the desktop after you access a Windows share.
Or more precisely, when you mount ("open") a share it will create a icon on the desktop
(its is also true for USB-key and external hard drive...)

So it is normal that the icon disappear after you reboot for example.
What is not normal is that you can't access your windows share from Places > Network > Windows Network
Are you share accessible from your other computer without problem ?

You can try connecting to a Windows machine by it's IP address (you should usually need to do this and it's worth a try and sometimes works better).
For example is the machine you want to access as the IP 192.168.1.8 (replace with yours). Type in the nautilus address bar:

smb://192.168.1.8/

Concerning accessing your Windows data... I have done a little google search and apparently when Ubuntu is installed though Wubi it mount your windows partition at /host
So just go to "/host" in Nautilus to access your data :)

I didn't know that the Wubi Installer handled windows Partition differently.... I guess it will be confusing to some user.

Hardy seems to break SMB for the local network. I restored my image copy of Gutsy, and file copying works just fine now.

indeed, windows files are found under /host as arekkusu correctly said!

Can you help with this problem?
