problems connecting to a network drive

Asked by kb9alr

I have a home network with a couple of PCs running WXP and one with Ubuntu. As part of the network I have a Hawkings HNAS1 network drive that I use to share files amongs my network . I have no problems accesing the network drive from the WXP PCs but from the one with Linux I can see the shared folder but when asked for user and password I get an error message "The folder contents could not be displayed".

This is the process that I follow to connect to the network drive: I go to places -> connect to server, a window opens in server type and I choose windows share, in server I type the IP address of the network drive with the shared folders, then in share I type the name of the shared folder ...then click connect and then it asks me for a user and password. Here is were I get the error message.

I get an icon on the desktop with the IP address of the network drive, when I double click I get a window with the icon of the shared folder that I want to access. When I double click this folder I get the next window with 'Authentication Required', here I type the username and password but cannot access the drive and get the error message. I have checked again the username and paswword with the WXP PCs and it works.

Any suggestions?

Appreciate your help.

Carlos

The following page details how to mount samba (SMB) shares from Ubuntu:-

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MountWindowsSharesPermanently

I suspect the bit you are missing is the "Credentials file" it mentions.

I have followed the instructiones and mounted samba and created the "credential files" but continue to have the same error. Any other ideas? Thanks!

I was not using a password to authenticate and it seems that this was the issue as when I selected a password I was able to access the network drive.
