Nautilus file size information

Asked by Nigel Haveron

in Nautilus when I select properties on a file it gives size as "4.4 GB (4700372992 bytes)" but on a group of selected files/folder and look at file sizes it says "82 items, totalling 4.4 GB" in a vague rounded up way, I would prefer to know exactly how may bytes there are so I can figure out if it will fit on a DVD.
Is there anyway to get it to always display in bytes?

Hello Nigel:

Thats a known problem in nautilus.. Even 4.37 GB is rounded off and shown as 4.44 GB!

A workaround is:

just open a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal) and go to the folder in question and enter

du -b

and you will get the size down in bytes!

Enjoy!

Thanks for the response, what you suggest is fine if in one folder but it is an annoyance when you select multiple files or folders, as the files are on the server I quite often end up booting windows in Virtualbox just so I can do what Nautilus can't.

Do you know if it is sorted out in Gnome 2.22?
