Deleting shortcuts from Places?

Asked by mgbridges

I accidentally dragged a large number of files into the shortcuts area in Nautilus (bottom left of Places bit). How do I delete them all quickly without having to go through each one individually?

Thanks,

Martin

Hello Martin:

If you have dragged shortcuts to the desktop then select all the files and hit shift+delete

This will delete the shortcuts permanently from the desktop and the computer

If you have dragged shortcuts on to the gnome panel do:

give the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)

rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity

and then reboot the system...

I'm always a bit paranoid about using rm -rf on files I don't know, so could you please explain what those files are before I blow them away?!

I executed the command exactly as given above and it has not resolved my problem. It reset my desktop background and broke my connection to my wireless network, but it has not fixed the problem.

Any other ideas?

I don't know if you've tried this already, but if you open up any nautilus window (just go to Places -> Home for example) and you click on the "Bookmarks" menu, it lists those shortcuts (I'm pretty sure). If the ones you want to get rid of are there, then I think you can simply remove them using the "Edit Bookmarks" link and all should be good.

Thanks, but Edit Bookmarks will still only let me delete a single one at a time. There are dozens in there so I want a way of deleting multiple boomarks at the same time.

mgbridges,

in nautilus press control+h (or check "view"->"hidden files") and then scroll down to the file named .gtk-bookmarks

this file has a list of all the bookmarks you are looking for
you can delete them from this text file and they will dissapear from your nautilus window
alternatively you could delete this file but that would destroy ALL your bookmarks

thanks!
