If you have DASH HOME at the left top corner ( You will see Ubuntu's logo there) you can click on it and type the name of that app. You can lock it in the launcher if it is frequently needed.

Otherwise search your APPLICATIONS

@Charles: you can download and install any applications you need via Ubuntu Software Center.

1) Which applications are you trying to install?

Details please.

2) What is the output of this command?

uname -a; cat /etc/lsb-release

In some old versions of Ubuntu you will not find DASH HOME
If what I mentioned in # 1 is not enough, you should know about your Ubuntu version. For this,

If you press the 3 keys --- CTRL+ALT+T simultaneously, you will be able to open the Terminal. Copy & Paste the following line in that Terminal

lsb_release -a; uname -a

Hit the ENTER Key. You will get an output. It will be about the Release, Description etc. Copy & Paste the output in the Message box below. This is essential to give you directions. ( ONLY IF IT IS NEEDED)

This will be useful in future, especially when you ask questions in Launchpad

Can you help with this problem?
