Additional RAM / Memory stick

Asked by Christophe NAUD

Hi there :)
I just want to know if it is possible to add more RAM to Ubuntu using a memory stick.
I understand it is possible with Windows, provided you do use memory stick with a 4 GB (or less) capacity but not more.

You can format it as swap space and set it to be used as swap but USB is VERY slow. I recommend a RAM upgrade which will make a genuine speed difference and is cheap. It is also easier than reconfiguring your OS to use the slow USB instead of the faster internal HDD.

It all depends on
1. Your laptop or motherboard
2. Whether your OS is 32-bit or 64-bit

Windows has nothing to do with what size memory stick you can use.

I took "memory stick" as referring to a DIMM of RAM (not a USB stick). Please clarify.

Also, please tell us what system you have. Output of dmidecode is helpful:
sudo apt-get install dmidecode
sudo dmidecode

Yes Daniel I meant memory stick. OS is ubuntu 12.04
problem is: I am using a 'slim' computer; there is a slot for additional
RAM . The problem is this slot is located rignt under the DVD/CD drive
and is absolutely inacessible....

You did not give the output of dmidecode...
Also, I asked what system you had and not what version of Ubuntu you have. For example, a Lenovo Thinkpad R530.

Anyway, just post the output of dmidecode and it will answer all those questions...

second question: it a slim desktop. As for the brand....
I bought it from Amazon nearly two years ago and since it has never
accepted Windows XP
Ubuntu seemed the only solution. Once again, there is a slot where to
insert additional RAM. Problem: this slot is inaccessible since it is
right under the DVD drive.

There must be a possibility to use the second RAM slot. Most probably you have to disassemble the DVD/CD drive first. Do you think that this is feasible?

Hello Manfred, thanks for your suggestion. Alas, the answer is no. It is
not feasible. If I could send you a photograph of this slim PC -the
interior and the motherboard- you would immediately understand why.

Wow, Foxconn is vague with their model names. I can't find much information on their support site for TPS01.

However, I did find this discussion on the same chipset (Intel NM10), which confirms that you can only have a maximum of 2GB per RAM slot. http://www.pcmech.com/forum/build-your-own-pc/223582-maximum-ram-nm10-chipset-motherboards.html

So, if you can't access the second slot, you're limited to 2GB (which is still a worthwhile upgrade if you can find a cheap 2GB stick of DDR2-800).

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Christophe NAUD for more information if necessary.
