why can't I download anything, Or make changes to my computer since I started using Ubuntu?

Since I started using Ubuntu on my computer I don't seem to be able to do anything. What do I need to do to fix it?

More information needed. What version of Ubuntu are you using? Does you computer have a make and model? Please tell you want to download. Are you using Ubuntu Software Center, or something off the internet? Check out this site.
