Probably just install "kubuntu-desktop" package, using Synaptic, or from terminal with:

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

After you install the package kubuntu-desktop Wrwrwr mentioned, sign out. In the lower left corner should be an Options button. Click it and then the Session item. Choose KDE from that dialog, close it, and continue to sign in. That should give you your KDE desktop. To switch back to GNOME, do the same process, but pick GNOME instead on the dialog.

thank you Wrwrwr and jacob peddicord. i installed the kde desktop package- took about 15 minutes- it kept going until "generating/boot/initrd.img2.6.22-14 generic" and stopped there and then the terminal appeared with its blinking cursor. i waited for a while and the hit enter but it just repeated itself. what do i put in the terminal??

Try installing kubuntu-desktop again from the terminal: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

If it still hangs, paste the results here and hopefully someone can see if there are any problems.

If it didn't show any error maybe it has finished, would just show a prompt in that case. You can't log in with a KDE session as Jacob advised above? If it shows some error, warning please paste it here.
