why there is a windows network icon with a RJ45 connector icon on it, in my LTS 12.04?

Asked by manjeet

I switched from Windows to Ubuntu and it is quite interesting for me to learn Ubuntu and hopefully contributing towards it in near future as m impressed with it.
I had installed Ubuntu from a bootable USB created under Windows XP using a sofware downloaded from Ubuntu website.
My question is : there is a Windows Network icon with an RJ45 type icon on it under Network option. When I click on it said failed to retrive list from server and I am not able to change permissions. I tried Nautilus but got "Nautilus cannot handle Network locations".
Please through some light on it and how can I handle Network locations.

Thanks a lot for every option of Ubuntu!

Cheers!

This Icon works only if you have set a Network Share location , you can access Windows from within Ubuntu via samba share (search for samba share on Google for more info)

If you opened nautilus as root , then it cannot handle such locations as root. If you open nautilus normally , then the most common message (when a network share is not exists) is "failed to retrieve server information".

Thanks

Thanks friends for the replies. I mistakenly deleted my system while trying to figure out. So sorry I was not able to print output for actionparsnip, but the explanation by NikTh looks meaningful to me I guess that was the reason. But I haven't shared anything and neither I want that Windows network icon and there is a lots of data in shared folder(which I never prefer). If these are the normal default behaviour in Ubuntu?
Thx!
