cannot access previously accessable computers on Home network

Asked by Richard Korsiak

I am currently running Ubuntu 6.06 with all the latest updates. Up until now I have been able to access the two (2) other computers on my wired home network. They are running Windows XP and 98SE respectively. When I access my network server, I show Windows network. When I access that, I show Mshome. When I access that, I show my desktop and the other 2 computers. Opening mine is no problem. When I try to open the other 2 I get " The folder contents could not be displayed". Up until now I have had no problem copying to and fro from my other computers. I have tried the suggestions listed on the support page under accessing files for xp and windows98 to no avail. I get the same messages. ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Just for the hell of it. I rebooted my computer using the Linux Knoppix Live CD and I get a time out message when i try to access the other 2 computers. Thanks again for ay and all suggestions......Rich

The fact that this doesn't work under both Ubuntu and Knoppix makes me think that the problem doesn't lie with your machine.

If you type:

smbtree

in a terminal, does the output include the hostnames of the other two machines? If not, or if you get an error message that suggests samba can see the machines but not access their contents, then I think that might be the place to start.

Last time I saw this it was caused by a botched Windows update and was fixed by rebooting the Windows computer in question. This might also be worth a try.

Andy

My problem is that I bought a used Toshiba Laptop Tecra and had Ubuntu 9.4 or 9.2 (with in the last 30 days. I have two other computers at home and an AT&T modem that I could get wireless connections-one is Windows XP and the other is that damn VISTA. When I brought home the Ubuntu I could not get connected to my wireless modem so I called AT&T and they "switched" channels and I could get connected on my Ubuntu but not on my windows. The modem has two options for connections. I called At&T back and they told me that they don't support Lenux. I tried connecting the computers to the modem with hard wire and went through the key numbers and hopping up and down on my left foot with no success. So my status now is I can get up on wireless with my Ubuntu but not my MS- I am sure Bill is quaking. Any help? Thanks

Sorry to hear about your network troubles. I had a different problem with my network than what you described, here again it was while ago. I was able to correct it ultimately by simply using my browser, I believe it was firefox, typing in the ip address of the router that was not recognizing my linux workstation, going into the routers properties and assigning an specific ip address instead of letting the router disignate one
I wish you well. If anything I have covered helps, let me know........Rich K.
