Computer not reconizing my MP3 player for downloading music

Asked by Patrick Mcfarland

Last week I downloaded some music and when I plugged my MP3 player the computer asked where I wanted to send it to and one of the choices was MP3 player. Now it won't reconize my MP3 player or show MP3 player as one of the choices of where I want to send the music to. I'm stumped on what happened or what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated and I should state that I'm computer illiterate, so if you can keep explanations in layman terms, this would be appreciated as well. Thank You!

Does the device have a make and model?
With the device attached, what is the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; lsusb

Thanks

If its not obvious that your MP3 player is listed when you run the commands requested above try running

lsusb

again with the device unplugged.

The difference will be your device. Most MP3 players are recognised as external drives and you can copy music on and off them with nautilus (the file manager).

What's Isusb? How do I get to it? Is this Nautilus(file manager) something already on my computer? Like in System Files? Do I download it? I wasn't joking when I said I was computer illiterate! Lols. Thank You though for trying to help me. I will look for this Isusb and Nautilus

I did the CTRL+ALT+T. What command am I to enter? If I enter lsb_release-a;uname-a;lsusb or Nautilus (file mgr) I receive "no such command found'. What do I enter after the Patrick@Ubuntu?

Nautilus is the name of the file manger. If you have an old version of Ubuntu select "Places"from the top menu and it will open.

If you have a more recent version its the icon that looks a bit like a folder in the dash: second one down on my system.

lsusb is command to be entered into the terminal

Make sure you have your MP3 player plugged in first and switched on.

The simplest way to open the terminal is to press CTRL, ALT and T together. In the window that opens Enter

lsb_release -a; uname -a; lsusb

Unplug your MP3 wait a few seconds (10 is more than enough) and Enter

lsusb

From the menu select "Edit" > "Select All" then "Edit" > "Copy". Paste all the results back here and we should be able to help further

I suggest you copy and paste from either my post or Andrews. The spaces are important too. "lsb_release -a" is a command "lsb_release-a" is meaningless.
