how do I add a default application to my system settings for opening pictures?

Asked by Mardi Hockenberry

I would like to add digiKam as my default program to open pictures for my system settings but it is not listed as an option. There is also not an option to add an application. I am running the latest version of Ubuntu.

Thank you.

Is there a .desktop file for it in /usr/share/applications for it?

I went into usr/share/applications and did not find a .desktop file. Thank you for showing me that path. It was nice to know how to see where to find the applications. I did find a defaults.list and clidked on it and it brought up a text file in a text editor. I found a list of different types of possible files. digiKam was not on it. I do not know if that is something that I should edit???? Or should I do something else?

There're currently some issues with gnome assigning default apps or rather variations of.
Workaround.
Right click on the file you'd like to open with digiKam permanently.
Select from the context menu 'properties'.
Select tab 'open with ...'
Select digiKam when available and make it mandatory by click on the referring button.
If it isn't available click the button 'view other applications' and search digiKam.

Please see: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/876897. I was not able to switch it to digiKam so I settled with ImageViewer. I wanted an application that did not take long to load and would switch to multiple images quickly.

Thanks :-)
