need help to play audio and video in Ubuntu

Dear Sir/Madam,

I wish to stated that i have installed successfully Ubuntu 6.10 in my computer . I am facing broblems about the.DAT files of videos to plya it saying dont have condec and you have to install neccassery pluge ins .

i would like you to advise me how can i installe neccessory plugeins and codec in my Ubuntu pc thanks

i would deeply apprecaite it if you could give me a prompt reply at your most convenient .
