ubuntu 11.10 will not keep system settings on reboot

Ubuntu 11.10 will not keep settings eg sound level and "show hidden files" on view menu when system is rebooted.

can you test running from terminal (to open terminal press CTRL + ALT + T)
rm -r ~/.pulse ~/.pulse-cookie
