Remove an unwanted file and directory from file system

Asked by Asoka Dissanayake

There is a folder named "Fedora-16-i386-DVD.iso.part" appearing in my File System directory. This is a part of an iso image download which failed some time ago. The folder takes a lot of useful memory (about 230 MB, according to file properties). I have been trying to remove this folder to get more precious disk space but could not do it yet.

The right-click, delete procedure does not work, even after adjusting behaviour under "Edit -> Preferences -> Create delete command bypassing trash."

File permissions could not be changed as a message says: "You are not the owner so you cannot change permissions." Tried Synaptic Package Manager too .

There doesn't seem to be a way out by using either Janitor or BleachBit. Tried some commands in the Terminal but failed. I assume this should have been in the Downloads folder. Somehow it shows in the File System directory.

Will somebody have a solution, probably a command which can be run through Terminal?

Do this:
1. Open a terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T
2. Insert and run this command:
gksu nautilus

!!!!!!!KEEP ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!
NOW YOU ARE THE ROOT USER!! YOU CAN REMOVE ANYTHING, THE SYSTEM FILES TOO. SO DON'T JOKE WITH YOUR SYSTEM OR IT WILL NOT WORK!!

3. Move to the folder with the file called "Fedora-16-i386-DVD.iso.part" and remove it.
4. Close the window and the terminal.

If that doesnt work or you struggle, if you can give the location of the file we can give a command.

Thanks Enrico. Did exactly as you said, keeping the "valuable" precaution in mind, carefully. And it worked! Now I've got rid of that unwanted folder. Again thank you for the warning - it should have been there, or I'd have ended up in further trouble.

It is only recently I learned that tweaking with ROOT commands is not recommended by Ubuntu (Ubuntu forums) but in this case I wouldn't have any options other than the one suggested by Enrico.

Although it is generally accepted that using ROOT commands is not advisable, Enrico's tip had to be used again and it was really helpful. This time, I had removed a user but opted to keep the files. These files included some videos using a lot of memory. They could not be deleted by any means. So, used this method again, with success!
