you have to

gksudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf
(look around on the net for docu)

then

sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

p.s. make a copy of smb.conf first...

OK. generally one only needs a samba server "restart" IF the smb.conf has been modified in any way (but doing a restart does no harm however...) more than likely you're here because some portion of your windows network is not being "seen". well IF you don't have a smb.conf file at all this more than likely indicates that some/all of samba "parts" may not even be installed. check that first (synaptic works there... just search on "samba"). note that there are excellent sources on the net relating to each section of the smb.conf samba config file (which is read each time the server starts (generally automatically at boot unless you've modified something). On our window boxes we've found that one needs to disable the firewalls, for example. and if you're using a router (most of us nowadays are going that route rather than a proxy) check that nothing a bit too "fancy" is going on over there (as most of them have default firewalls). also ascertain that your windows boxes are seeing each other (or at least the ones you want) BEFORE attempting to access them via samba. and yes DO make a copy of smb.conf b4 you do ANYTHING as exacct suggests!
