Ubuntu 11.10 home folder opens as software center

Asked by Stewart Moran

I knew it was to good to be true. Using Gnome desktop in Ubuntu 11.10. When I try to open my "Home" folder, Software Center opens with the message, NOT FOUND There isn't a software program called "" in your current software sources. I can open "Files" which takes me right to my "Home" folder. Have not really done anything since last evening when Eliah supplied me with a fix for yesterdays screwup. Everything else appears to be working fine, I can open up with Unity, and Gnome Classic, and they all seem to be functioning.

Any thoughts or suggestions that will get my Home Icon to open my Home folder are most appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time and assistance

Stewart

Somehow the default application for opening folders got changed to the Software Center which is, as you've observed, way wrong.

It would be neat if someone could figure out exactly what causes this sort of thing to happen occasionally, so that it could be treated as a bug and be fixed.

Fortunately, on any system where this has occurred, you can fix it pretty easily. One method that should work is to press Alt+F2 and run the command:

exo-preferred-applications

(If that doesn't do anything or gives you an error saying that it cannot find it, then install the package called exo-utils in the Software Center and try again.)

Then in the Preferred Applications window (which should come up when you run that command), click the Utilities tab and select Nautilus as the File Manager (in the drop-down menu under "File Manager - The preferred file manager will be used to browse the contents of folders."). Then click the Close button, and you should be all set.

If for any reason the above advice doesn't work, please post a reply so we can keep working on the problem. (If it does work, you can mark this question as Solved.)

Alternatively, you can open a file browser window (open Files, find any folder), click Open With Other Application..., find File Browser, and check the box labeled 'Remember this application for "folder" files' (see http://askubuntu.com/questions/13958/vlc-is-set-to-open-the-folders-home-desktop-documents-etc-in-the-places-menu/14005#14005).

Hello again Eliah,

Attempted your solution # 1, and entered the exo-preferred-applications command in the little black box. Need to go to step 2 with software center, but cannot close out of little black box, so I am kind of stuck. Using windows computer to post this.

Thanks

Stewart

After pressing Alt+F2, with

exo-preferred-applications

in the text box, press enter to run it.

If that doesn't work, then press Escape a few times to make the dash go away, then press Ctrl+Alt+T to open a Terminal window, then run that command in the Terminal.

Then you can proceed with my first suggested solution.
