what is a .exe file?

 I'm new to linux, went looking for some different games, I used to use real arcade in windows which i understand I cant use...anyway found some game sites that appeared to be linux compatable, downloaded a game but dont know where it went then, i got a download screen and on my desktop there is a icon (mahjong.exe?) how do i open this ?

The file is an MS windows program file. You can get (most) exe's running in ubuntu using 'wine'.

Have you actually looked at add/remove programs to see what's installable? In ubuntu you don't really need to download programs from the web. ubuntu will use it's own software repositories if you use Add/Remove Programs.

...and there are plenty of arcade games in ubuntu.
