zip file

Asked by jc@infowest.com

Under Applications-accessories, there is a link to "winzip" when I click on this link I receive an ERROR message, "could not launch winzip" Failed to execute child process "archive". (no file or directory) Do I need this link, if I don't how can I delete it?

winzip is not a linux program, and does not run (or even install!) natively under ubuntu (you can technically run it using an emulator...).

If you wish to open zip files in ubuntu, please use the "file-roller" program. It should be already associated with zip files, so all you have to do is click on the zip file in your file manager (nautilus).

It should be already installed,if not,go to Software center and search for file roller,
You can either open File Roller through Dash,Or you can click on a zip file and it opens automatically

jc: file-roller comes pre-installed in ubuntu as part of the "file-roller" package; you shouldn't need to install it.

Nor should you need to launch it explicitly. You should just be able to click on any zip file in nautilus and it will open using file-roller.

If you need to make a zip file, you can right click the folder or file you wish to zip and select "compress".

If you are really stuck, and can't find it anywhere else, you can launch it manually via browsing to /usr/bin then clicking on the file-roller program. This is not the recommended method, as it is a bit long-winded and odd.
