If you use thunderbird (3.x):
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/auto-resize-image/

If you dont, simply install nautilus' image convertor:
nautilus-image-converter

Or you can just install and use gimp's resize function -- simply drag the image into the gimp main window area or toolbox, then select image->scale image, then choose the number of pixels you want -- probably ~800 pixels for a photo.

You can also use imagemagick or mogrify at command line to resize files.

http://www.imagemagick.org/script/mogrify.php

This allows easy manipulating of multiple images in one move :)
