You have a conflict on a graphical layer between X server (which is low level) and your applications. Did you installed/upgraded recently a software ?

The only software installed is the ubunutu/linux software updates I haven't installed anything.  This has been happening since I installed ubunutu/linux but lived with it until now as it's truly annoying to reboot every 2 mins.

Ok this ran it passed show 510 M  2284 mbs RAM set 199 MHz  I am not sure how this is causing the machine too freeze & crash when it's clearly an application issue.

Please don't post with previous message included. It's a nightmare for people using web based forum.
Freezing can have many sources (too many). RAM is one. It can be also heat (in France, temperature are raising, and I will soon have this issue...).
When it freeze, do you always have Gdk error message ? In this case, it's not a system freeze but a graphic management freeze.
When it freeze, could you type Ctrl+Alt+F1 ? Do you get a prompt ?

I did the ctrl alt f1 & got a prompt i logged in as root & got this msg & duplicated it with the same commands from wiki.ubunutu ... but the information does not provide how to fix it. I have a dell pc & couldnt find the information needed when i booted there wasnt anything in CPU or System Security menu to enable nx I continued to search more but havent found anything to figure out how to enable the nx.

kat@kat-desktop:~$ grep ^flags /proc/cpuinfo | head -n1 | egrep --color=auto ' (pae|nx) '
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe constant_tsc pebs bts pni dtes64 monitor ds_cpl cid xtpr
kat@kat-desktop:~$ /usr/bin/check-bios-nx --verbose
This CPU is family 15, model 4, and has NX capabilities but is unable to
use these protective features because the BIOS is configured to disable
the capability. Please enable this in your BIOS. For more details, see:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/CPUFeatures

Yes I continually get them & it freezes & crashes.. is there a software component missing ... like a wrap around or something? I'm not sure I have all the components correctly configured for firefox.

Please subscribe the bug to be informed of progress in it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.5/+bug/401823 .
The fact that you get a prompt after Ctrl+Alt+F1 means kernel is not friezed but graphic server. The issue seems to be related to Firefox.
Don't reboot via power off, else you will one day broke file systems. Do Ctrl+Alt+F1, log in and type command "sudo reboot -h". You could also run command "ps" and kill X server, after type Ctrl+Alt+F7 and look if you get again graphic login.
Sorry, but it's not a domain I master.

Can you help with this problem?
