Launch as Superuser or root

Asked by stumpy

I admit I'm a newbie so that whole 'use a terminal and sudo stuff leaves me cold.
So that I can edit .conf files in the etc folder easily, I need root or superuser permissions and so I wondered if there's a way of having a second 'Browse as superuser' for Nautilus or something like that from the main drop down 'places' menu. (if there is, please, make the answer easy for a D grade student please).
That way if I want to edit files or move my website into the root www folder I can do it without resorting to the very 80's terminal window (sorry, I know it sounds like I'm slapping Linux in the face, but as a user interface is everything!) to give me permissions.

After re-reading my question, maybe what I really need is a 'Open as Superuser' option on the right-click of a file..? If that's what I mean, is this possible??

This link will provide you with a script to open a root nautilus in a selected window:

Copy it to "/home/texjoachim/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts" and don't forget to make it executable.

1. Alt+F2
2. Type gksudo nautilus
3. Hit enter and give your password.

As for that context menu option, I think you'd need a script.

Read the introduction to this page:

And then install this script:

Hi, you can type in a terminal:
gksudo nautilus or sudo nautilus.
nautilus will start with administrator rights...

Otherwise you can also install the package nautilus-gksu that enables an option when you right-click on a file (also directories and other...) in nautilus: "Open as root".
After installed it restart GNOME and your Nautilus will have the new feature.

Can you help with this problem?
