You should also have the gstreamer plugins installed - may be you are trying to open proprietary formats, codecs for which are not installed by default. Install the gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly packages, as well as the ffmpeg packages, and if this is a codec issue, it shall be resolved.

Also, when you ask a question, it would be helpful if you would indicate the exact error message that you got, which would point answers in the right direction. "couldn't get open" can happen for a huge number of reasons, though I am suspecting you have a codec issue.
