how do i free disk space

please i have a mini ausus laptop with just 12 gb in 2 partition of 4 and 8. After installing ubuntu and a few application it keeps telling me my disk space is low...unlike in windows i dont know the things i can delete from usr, var, boot, etc files where bulk of the space is. Please where do go to delete the unneccessary files. thanks

From Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager) remove these packages:

ubuntu-docs
openoffice.org-help

From the Ubuntu software centre uninstall any program you don't use. Be carefull as some programs are needed for other programs to run so check what is getting unsinstalled.

thanks federico, i did exactly that and about 300mb was freed. is there else i can do to free more space..because it slows down my system..cheers

Please close all GUIs (Synaptic, SoftwareCenter, UpdateManager).
Open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Type:
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get clean

To review disk space in terminal type:
df -h

In case remove older kernel images, to keep the last two (incl. the current) should be ok.
