Open a folder, go to View -> Organize -> By modification date

When Nautilus (browser mode) has list view, a folder will display a bar above with e.g. name, date of change and so on. By clicking on date of change one can sort the list up- or downwards.

Another option to search documents and fine grade the search is
Places -> search documents

Reference. (at the moment servers are down due to release of Gnome3)
