Do you know which file system the harddisk is formated with? NTFS?

If yes: NTFS had to be reversed engineered. This took a couple of years until the developers of linux said, that it is save to write onto NTFS harddisk under linux. The driver is called "ntfs-3g" an can be installed since ubuntu feisty. Under

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MountingWindowsPartitions/ThirdPartyNTFS3G

you can find more informations. The next version of ubuntu installs this driver automatically.
