only show icons for external drives on desktop?

Asked by Jan Schürmann

it's easily possible to not show any drive-icons on the desktop, but then of course, no USB sticks, cameras or external HDDs will be shown.

It is possible to hide only internal partitions/drives on the desktop? but to have all external drives shown?

You won't see drive icons. You see PARTITION icons. Windows incorrectly names partitions as drives which confuses users when they come to an OS which names them correctly. You can have one physical drive and create 2 partitions. Windows will say you have a 'c drive' and a 'd drive' which is WRONG as there is only one drive but 2 partitions.

Ubuntu tweak may do it.

that WASN'T my question. i'm using Linux nearly 5 years and i know that the drive-icons on my desktop are partitions!

i mean: i don't want internal DRIVES, which are PARTITIONS, not to be shown on my desktop but external DRIVES like USB-DRIVES or cameras, which are PARTITIONS too, has to be shown.

with Ubuntu Tweak and gconf-editor i only could setup nautilus to show or not show any DRIVE/PARTITION, it doesn't differentiate from external or internal...

sorry for my inaccuracy regarding DRIVE/PARTITION management in Unix systems

It just saves confusion if you use the right terminology.

You could submit a feature suggestion or a bug to request the 2 be differentiated somehow. Maybe someone else can contribute. As far as I am aware its all or nothing.

In the file /etc/fstab, just add the partitions you do not want mounted with a noauto option. e.g.:
UUID="6b3467d1-699c-4f5b-8593-98f66072c3e3" /mnt/sdc8 ext3 user,noauto,nosuid,rw,relatime 0 0

that wasn't clear for me, if i don't mount the partitions, they aren't shown, that's right but if i mount them, they are shown, so that isn't an answer for my question...

Hi Jan,

I have not tried, but you might be able to simply move them offscreen as a hack-workaround.

There is a key in gconf-editor that controls the position of icons on your desktop, including the volume icons.

/apps/nautilus/desktop-metadata/VOLUMENAME/nautilus-icon-position

and one that controls the icon size:
/apps/nautilus/desktop-metadata/VOLUMENAME/nautilus-icon-scale

I have xfce running on this machine, so I can't tell if it works, but gconf editor will allow you to enter in a zero scale, and a position greater than the width of your screen.

Can you help with this problem?
