Ubuntu 10.10 cannot find Autorun

Asked by Cliffm

Since I have had to re-load Ubuntu 10.10 a couple of times. I now find these problems;
Evolution no longer functions.
   cannot send email
will not close, just fades then hangs up
Deleted program and re-loaded twice still the same.
Can not load my printer software, cannot find autorun.
Printer loaded before and worked fine
Have not tried to load NVIDIA again.
Tried this twice. Same results drivers down loaded then had to restart to finish install. System shut down but never came back.
Questions; Has my copy of Ubuntu 10.10 been corrupted?
Or has my hard drive been corrupted? Although the last time I loaded Ubuntu the hard drive was checked and was ok.
For any of the above have I missed a switch or some other means of making them work?
I really have been happy with Ubuntu since 8.14.

>Has my copy of Ubuntu 10.10 been corrupted?
Probably not.

>Evolution no longer functions.

Try resetting your evolution profile by moving the folder ".evolution" in your home folder (turn on hidden files with view->show hidden files in the file manager) to something like ".evolution-backup".

Installing/reinstalling the program will have no effect if the problem is due to a damaged profile.

>Can not load my printer software, cannot find autorun.

Autoruns on disks are easily abused as virus loading mechanisms, and are thus considered a bad idea. Thus:

1) Ubuntu does not support auto-running of binaries on pluggable media.
2) Autoruns are not a function of the CD. They are WINDOWS programs running of the disk. You are running ubuntu, and thus these are not going to function.

If you supply your printer model/make, we might be able to help you find appropriate drivers.

Hello mycae
Restarted Evolution after moving .evolution. That was about an hour ago it is still downloading very slowly.
one bar says 'checking for new mail (0% complete)'
the other bar says 'Downloading new messages for offline mode (10% complete)
so far this is the same thing it was doing.

I have always used wine to load my printer and never had a problem before.
The printer is an Epson Stylus CX9400Fax

You need to look for your ISPs' mail settings; they are barring you from sending email using their server; this is either a configuration error at your side, or a problem with their mail server settings.

Are you sending with the same email address you use to receive and login?

Regarding your printer, this is supposedly supported out-of-the-box. Can you open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T), and with the printer turned on, and plugged in, can you enter the following command

lsusb

and then post the results here?

Have found drivers for Epson stylus CX9400Fax at AVASYS.com. Tried to install but received this message

cliffm@cliffm:~$ sudo dpkg -i pipslite_1.5.0-*_i386.deb
[sudo] password for cliffm:
dpkg: error processing pipslite_1.5.0-*_i386.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
 pipslite_1.5.0-*_i386.deb

Have contacted AVA also. This looks like their problem, unless I have done something wrong.
The Evolution still works like it did.

The file is not in your home folder. "pipslite_1.5.0-*_i386.deb" should be converted into an actual filename if you press tab when entering it, as the "*" means "match anything".

Thanks mycae
Thanks for the hand holding.
When I went back to the AVA site I found a better down load at the bottom of the page.
This down load starts the package manager in Ubuntu Software Center. I am now printing just fine these are fairly new drivers.
You gave me some ideas to try and get Evolution back. It still won't send emails although Thunderbird does. Just don't like contact list.
Thanks again for your help.
