1.5MB Digital photos made smaller for zip file

Asked by Viv Sahinovic

I would like to send about 50 photos in a zip file to contacts overseas. I know how to create the zip file but my photos I have are 2560 x 1920 each and the file is too big and takes too long. How do I make my photos smaller. I have them stored on Shotwell Photo Manager. ?

You can achieve better compression using the bzip2 format. Save your images under a common directory. Then right click on that directory and choose "Compress". Use .tar.bz2 as the extension of the created file from the drop-down menu next to "Filename" and then press "Create".

Compressing photos is not usually efficient, as each photos is already compressed in JPEG format.
Instead of sending your photos by mail, you could put them in a shared folder like:
   http://www.4shared.com/
or which one provided by your Internet provider (you can usually use space reserved for your personal Web page),
and only send a link to the archive.
Ubuntu One also offers you shared online storage.

Resize them (ie reduce the number of pixels in the image). To do this install the GNU image manipulation program "GIMP".
