no native drivers for usb devices

I plugged my usb flash drive in but it didn't register at all... nothing. I tried to install windows drivers using wine, but it only went to the second screen and vanished off to the side of the screen,,,,,,,, ? Ian

lets find out what we are dealing with here...
open a terminal and type

lsusb

this command will tell you what devices are connected to the USB port and also give the manufacturer and product ID.

drag your mouse over the output of that command, right click and choose "copy", then paste it into your reply here.

USB drives should "just work" on Ubuntu, though if you had to use special software in Windows to access it, you may be dealing with some kind of encryption.

Thank you, that worked.I think the system needed a reboot so I did that and it seems ok.
