access Hard Drive with Live-CD

Asked by normalo

Hello there!

Being new to the whole Ubuntu-GNU-Linux stuff, I just downloaded and launched the live-CD of Xubuntu (10.10) in order to access my HD and get rid of some unwanted (Windows) system-file on it.

I've rummaged the web and this "Launchpad" too, but I'm still unable to achieve that: the root is marked with a cross and unacessible, and I couldn't find "Places", nor the "Computer". Even a Command-line solution which is given here ("ls-a ... sthg") fails...

Any clue? (I'm favoring GUI-solutions over terminal knick-knack, which again, is quite incomprehensible to me).

Many thanks in advance!

If you click places you will see the partition there and you can mount it there. It will open nautilus but close it. You can then run:

gksudo nautilus

and get write access to the partition.

Thanx actionparsnip!

But what do you call 'places' exactly? (I'm running Xubuntu in french, so I assume it's the same as 'raccourcis' [2d item on the menu], but, in this case, I still can't find 'nautilus'...(

And where do I have to type 'gksudo nautilus'? (I'm thinking of the 'terminal', but am not too sure)...

Sorry for being noob-ish...

Click "Raccourcis" and you will see the partition of your hard drive. "Nautilus" means file manager which opens after you clicked any partition where you can see your files.
As per actionparsnip comment if you try with "gksudo nautilus" the file manager opens with write permission.

Type CTL+ALT+T to get into terminal
then type: gksudo nautilus

Now the filemanager opens and you can select your partition.

Press CTL+ALT+T to get into terminal
then type: gksudo nautilus

Now the filemanager opens and you can select your partition.
