how to read MAC files from ubuntu

im running/trying ubuntu from a CD on my Macbook. so not yet really fully installed. however, im trying to access files on the MAC system but it always says, "you do not have permission to view content". please help on how to view these files and be able to save to the MAC folders as well. also have NTFS windows running on the same PC and can view and save to the windows system from ubuntu. how come? what do i need to set on the MAC or on the ubuntu to allow viewing and saving on the MAC system...?
