ubuntu maverick: Nautilus slow to load directory

Asked by Frank McCormick

Running up to date Meerkat - dual core Intel 2.66 mhz -
Nautilus itself loads quickly....but takes 5-8 sec to load a
directory..any directory even one with few(5-15) items in it.
Is this just happening to me or is it a common problem??
I have turned off all previews...and am asking only for a
couple of field for files and directories. I'm baffled.

It takes my installation 22 seconds to open the /usr/share directory with 333 entries. This is with a fresh install of 10.10 64 bit on an i7-980 with 12 gig of ram. 10.10 Updated every day. If there is a solution to this please post the information.

46 seconds to open /usr/share/doc with 1,500 entries. If there is a setting somewhere that would make Nautilus usable I would love to know where it is.

What I did was dumping all the gnome config directories in my home directory. Lost all my customizations but Nautilus now loads most directories quickly. I can only assume it must have been a bad config file somewhere.
