full file-path in the status-line

Asked by Hartmut Schorrig

It will be very nice, if the full file-path of the selected file would be shown in the status line, to enable copy in the clipboard.
Why? Sometimes the file name, or the current directory is need for any other tool to input it. For example, I have used hexedit, it ask me to the file-name. Other example: Using the Eclipse-IDE, creating a linked folder, the path to the folder is needed. It is more simple to copy the path with clipboard from nautilus from the selected position, as select with a file-browse from the GUI newly.

If the file-path is lightweight available, it can be used in a terminal too, to select the current dir (using "cd " <strg-shift-V> <enter>) or to enter a file-name or file-path. So working with a terminal and the file navigation with nautilus is able to use properly.

Is it able to show? It is able to regard in further revisions? Are there a plugin?

Press CTRL+L

You can now see the path in the address bar :)

Ok, ctrl-L does work. I see the path. But I can't copy it to the clipboard. It is possible to mark the path or only a few characters (part of path), but <ctrl-C> and "edit-copy" don't copy the marked content, but the selected file with the full path, whereby the selected file may be another now, as shown in the address bar.

The <ctrl-C> at a selected file is the half of that, what I want. I didn't try it before. But the intension is, to copy a part of the path if necessary, from address bar after <ctrl-L> and selection with cursor, for example to get the right part of a relative path in the clipboard, or for example to get the path starting after the home/user/ -part.

Is there a possibility?

Ok, the article is good!

<ctrl-L> is the short key to switch to the address bar, where changing to a textual given directory is possible. The current directory is offered as default. That's the idea of the address-bar, I understand.

<ctrl-C> does work as copy to clipboard for the selected text in the address bar, if it is focused (the cursor is there). But <ctrl-C> copies the path of the selected file, if the address bare is not focused. That's ok too.

It is possible to write anything in the address bar, especially the <ctrl-C>-result of a selected file. Then the file-name with full path is present there, and the whole file-path-name can be copied, or a part of them, depending on selection in the line. The address-bar is used as a simple-edit-line then. That is okay, and it is, what I want. Now some parts of file-paths can be transported via clipboard to any other application, for example to a shell command. That is beautiful.

The possibility of inputing a path in the address-bar, and change to that directory is a nice thing. If the address bar has a history for this usage, it will be a fine extension too.

The possibility of usage of the navigation buttons (breadcrumbs) is very nice too!! I think, switching between this two modes with <ctrl-L> and <esc> is okay!! I like key-pressing instead the mouse. But a button in the GUI where fine also, because the button is visible. - Try what it does, and read tool-tips for newcomers.
