how i fix nautilus. it will not respond.

Asked by divali

Whenever I try to start nautilus the desktop freezes.
I have tried:

#Control/alt/backspace to restart.

#sudo Apt-get remove nautilus

#Then re-install nautilus.

#sudo nautilus Gives me:
Initializing gnome-mount extension

(nautilus:733: libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libmapping.so' (/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libmapping.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

(nautilus:733: libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libmapping.so' (/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libmapping.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

#Then I did:
sudo apt-get --purge remove libmapping.so
sudo apt-get install libmapping.so

#and libmapping.so could not be found.

So I decided to Remove nautilus-cd burner and then re-install it.

Still no response from nautilus.
end.

Do you know how this problem started? It seems like you deleted some necessary files. Also, what do you mean by no response from nautilus? Can you run other programs like Firefox and Terminal?

#nautilus will not open with either sudo or gksudo from the terminal.
I don't know how it started I don't think I deleted any files.
Also I did ctrl/alt/f1 to get out of the desktop but nothing happened. Is this related?

Firefox and all other apps work ok. also I can use a terminal on the desktop.
Midnight Commander works so does Claw4.

I just ran across a bug related to a "forbidden" file name which froze Nautyness in its tracks and might be happening to you.
Nautilus was choking on the file name 'forEd' which sent it off to Timbulia.
Check that you might have introduced on your Desktop some kind of unusually named file (unusual characters or possibly beginning with 'for...' and try renameing them, if they exist. Just a wild shot in the dark.

Try moving your Gnome settings. This will reset your desktop.

In a terminal, do:

mv .gnome2 .gnome2OLD
mv .nautilus .nautilusOLD

then, log out and in - hopefully everything will work.

I am not a computer person and am traveling away from my computer geek friends. My computer froze and when I rebooted I had no icons on my desktop but they are still in my files. Any idea what I can do to put them back on? Thanks, m

Please check whether at the time of boot if you have and CD or DVD placed in your CD/DVD drive, if yes, please remove it and boot again. Nautilus should work.

I too had the same problem with launching nautilus . It used to fail to launch.

Did the above thing and it worked for me.

Please do reply.
