When you use the places menu and access folders you are using nautilus. Its part of the stock install.

Hi, thanks for the reply and clarification, much appreciated. Since I want to network(all machine are thru CCProxy) my other Windows based computers with the laptops/desktops running Ubuntu 10.04LTS, via samba, how do I go about doing this please. How/where do I type this: smb://server/share - is this thru the browser? Please assist.
Thanks

You type it in the address bar in nautilus.

I believe you have to click the little pencil on the left of the bar to change it to text mode (or it will be an option in nautilus itself)

You can also use command line:

nautilus smb://server/share

obviously replace 'server' and 'share' with the right info.

Hi,
Thank you soo much - i kinda of understand now, hopefully i can achieve this. Viewed the link shown, and noticed "PLACES" with all the sub folders/menus. Somehow me laptop running 9.10 does not show that, so I assume that only comes about after setting up the server/share. Do correct me if I am wrong/or what I am doing wrong. I do however notices on me laptop that, upon right click on me file(s) it gives me the option if I want to share, so I probably did something right somewhere. Any further enlightentment is much appreciated.

You can drag folders (including samba shares) to the left panel in nautilus and they will be visible in the places menu. You can right click folders and select share in the same way other operating systems do and the OS will offer to install samba if it is not already installed.

Thanks soo much fer the patience and help. Today have installed UBUNTU 10.04LTS on one desktop machine - installation was a breeze, configured the proxy and yes!!!! we are connected and can see/access the other XP machine and server. Other than configuring the email and Proxy settings, everything else was automatically set including the IP address.
All in all - all thanks to yer kindness, patience and help did all this come together, and I want to emphasize that in my books, UBUNTU is the way to go.
Great job folks AND AGAIN MY DEEPEST THANKS
