Bugs since update to 10.04 - how to go back to 9.10

Asked by Marie-Helene Perron

I just updated from 9.10 to 10.04

The only thing I can see now are the files and folders. I can not access the programs anymore or the office.

What can I do ? Is it possible to go back to 9.10 ?

Please advise.

If you really want to go back you can simply insert your 9.10 CD and restart your machine. Why not try to fix the 10.04? I have it and it is so much better than 9.10 was, easier to navigate, Faster also:)
Please explain what is happening and someone can most likely help you get it running smoothly.

Hi :)

I agree about Marcobra :)

It is not possible to simply downgrade to 9.10 and simply sticking the Cd in might well lose you data if you just reinstall over the top of your existing data! There are a couple of neat tricks tho! So, please could you get to a command-line and give us the output of

sudo fdisk -l

where "-l" is a lower-case "-L". Also i was wondering if you are using the 32bit desktop edition or some other variant?
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks all for your quick reply.

I can not see the toolbar nor the panel. I can not see/access any applications nor programs.
The only things I can see are the folders in my desktop and the ''file system'' disk.

I don't know how I can go to ''terminal'' to enter command line as I don't see it ...

Please advise. Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi

Sorry no-one has got back to you earlier. To get to a command-line try pressing Ctrl & F2, this should bring up a dialogue box into which you can type

gnome-terminal

to open a normal linux command-line. Then pop-up dialogue box is itself a command-line but i prefer using the full proper one you get by typing "gnome-terminal" into that. Also it might be worth pressing Ctrl & F2 again but this time type in

firefox

to open a firefox web-browser so you can surf into here. The output of "sudo fdisk -l" is quite long and not worth copy out by hand so copy&paste is much more useful. Also on the decent command-line it might be worth typing in

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

just to see if that helps at all.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

Ahah, i made a mistake! It was Alt&F2 that i was thinking of. Ok, in the "Run Application" window can you type in

firefox

Does that give you a web-browser window?
In another "Run Application" window can you enter

gnome-terminal

to open a normal command-line window (which we would usually call a "terminal console")? If so into that please try

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

Just to see if the 'only' problem is that the panels have somehow gone wonky.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

WoooHooo, congrats :))

So you can open Firefox from the top taskbar but it just doesn't access the internet? Can you open Synaptic Package Manager to "fix broken packages"? From the top taskbar/panel click on

System - Administration - Synaptic

Then in it's "Edit" menu click on "Fix broken packages" and then click on the apply button. It might well not work complaining that it can't connect to the repositories but it is worth a try. Please let us know how this goes!
Good luck and regards from

I tried to do it in synaptic but no broken package ...

My computer doesn't automatically connect to the wi-fi and I can't find the list of the networks available. Any idea how to proceed ?

Once again, thank you so much for your help.

BR,

marie

Hi :)

Ok, i am totally clueless about wiifi and it is a different question so probably the best plan is to re-post the question about wiifi separately. Here's a link to help with that
