Installation Failure of Turbocad 10 Professional

Asked by rapper

I have just loaded Ubuntu as a first time user and have struck this problem - can anyone help me please?

Does Ubuntu run setup exe's that run on XP (but not on Vista)? The CD self-starts from autoinf on XP system, but will not self start on Ubuntu.

If I go to the filing system and run setup.exe direct from the CD I get the following error:-

Archive: /media/TC10-DISK1 /setup.exe
[/media/TC10-DISK1 /setup.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/TC10-DISK1 /setup.exe or
          /media/TC10-DISK1 /setup.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/TC10-DISK1 /setup.exe.ZIP, period.

Hey rapper :)

Ubuntu can not natively handle Windows .exe’s. Considering TurboCAD is a Windows program, you will need Wine, an emulator for Windows programs. Just download it from the Software Center and then you’ll be able to use any .exe, just like in Windows.

Not every program is properly emulated though; but try it yourself. You can check compatibility tables at: http://www.winehq.org/

If that does not work and you’re not reliant on TurboCAD specifically, you can still search the Software Center for CAD or try running other Windows CAD programs in Wine.

Hi Jan-Christoph,

Firstly - TY very much for your advice. - I will try this as soon as I can get Ubuntu running properly. At the moment I seem to have another problem with it not recognising disk space that several people are very generously helping me with. It seems like I have to scrap what I have got and have a whack at a second installation. When I get that going, then I can come back to this issue.

I will let you know when I get back to it and whether I am a goer or not

In the meantime, TY again.
