delete old Ubuntu

Asked by CosmikDebris

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 several (about 3) times inadvertently and it keeps encroaching on my Windows XP space. How do I delete previous installations so I only have one of Ubuntu 9.10 and recover that space?

Did you install Ubuntu using the Windows installer, or did you boot from a disc to install it?

I booted from the disc each time. I was able to use GParted to remove the old installations, tried a new installation from disc of the Ubuntu 9.10, which did not for some reason go through, and I am again left with the dreaded "grub rescue" prompt now on each reboot of my computer...it won't even let Windows XP appear.

I thought I'd try Linux, but it wants to control the MBR and assumes you know too much, like how to respond to that "grub rescue" prompt. I use NTFS file system and Linux wants to change everthing to SCS or something. VERY frustrating!

Hi, your answer is not very clear, so it's difficult to offer valuable help. If I understand properly, you have some partitions on which you don't have anything valuable, and you want to use that space. The simplest is to use gparted to format these partitions into ntfs or any other file system, and they will appear as free drives both in Linux and in Windows.

Linux proposes by default to change NTFS partitions into EXT partitions because EXT are considered as better by the people who are designing Linux distributions. They try to give you the best technical advice, if you prefer to ignore it and format in NTFS, just do it.
