Asked by Victoria Bushaw-Boichot

I need to download a different software so I can hear my online radio station. The one I just downloaded will not work with it and I forgot what other ones were listed to download.

More information please!

What is your online radio called? What format is it in? What did you download?

Hi :)

Please can you work through the Medibuntu worksheet to try to sort out all the multimedia issues
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

If that doesn't also sort the radio then perhaps this guide might help?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
although if the issue is about radio rather than sound then this might not help

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I have another problem.  I am having problems logging on Ubuntu.  It freezes right at the point when I have to login.  My friend sold me the computer that I have now and led me to believe that it had 60Gbs but I found out after I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and made the decission to run both Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10 that I only had 16Gbs.  It is an older version of Windows XP and I rather just have Ubuntu 9.10 as a running system only because this computer has only 16Gbs.  I have the 32bit version of Ubuntu 9.10.  I installed it from the CD and used it for boot disk with the system on it.  I hope you know what I am talking about.  Is there any way to add memory or free space to run Ubutu?  I just had to ask.

Thank You

I listen to an online radio station. It is called Smooth Jazz V98.7 HD2 Radio. It is a CBS station that plays online as well as on Digital Radio. It is the only way I can listen to it. I don't have a digital radio so I have to listen to it online. It used to be called Smooth Jazz V98.7 FM but it is not on the FM fequency anymore.

Please help me with another problem. How do I add more memory to Ubuntu 9.10? I am having problems bringing up Ubuntu again. I had only 16Gbs instead of 60Gbs or storage and I need to know how to add more memory or to delete Windows XP altogether because I love the way that Ubuntu 9.10 runs. I regret keeping Windows XP now I want to delete it. How can I delete Windows XP if I can't add more memory or free space so I can run Ubuntu 9.10?

Hi :)

To deal with Xp ...
1. i think boot into Xp and defrag it. I think the defrag program is
Start button - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools
2. Please can you boot up from the Cd of Ubuntu to a LiveCd session
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
I think you said you had done this before. With the LiveCd go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Partition Editor

and shrink the ntfs/fat32 partition down really small. Let it have some free space still but try to give Ubuntu at least 10Gb. Is that possible? Currently Xp is the only working OS on your system & it probably has data in it that needs to be moved to the hard-drive version of Ubuntu.

You can try to do this from the LiveCd session but it's awkward and confusing. The LiveCd sets up it's own Documents fodlers and everything in those gets forgotten when you shut-down the machine. Somewhere in "Places" you could find the Ubuntu that you have on the hard-drive but how would you be certain you had saved to the right place?

So, i think it's worth trying to keep Xp for now, at least until we manage to get Ubuntu working or can be reasonably certain it is the space issue that is the only problem with Ubuntu. Most of us have a dual-boot, usually with a Windows.

3. Using the LiveCd pleae get to a command-line and try

sudo fdisk -l

where " -l" is a lower-case " -L" and copy&paste the info into here. The LiveCd should be able to surf into here through firefox or something. Hopefully that might show us if Ubuntu already has enough space

Note that hard-dive space is not usually referred to as memory because that word is usually used to refer to RAM rather than storage space. Sometimes authors and people with no idea about computers try to sound all knowledgeable but just add to the general confusion. Sorry about that.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I looked up your radio station (Smooth Jazz V98.7 HD2) online and to listen to the station via the web you need to utilize a Flash Player. Click on System -> Administration -> Software Sources, enter your password if prompted to. Put a check in the box next to "Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (multiverse)". Close the Software Sources window, and another window should pop up stating the info about the software is out-of-date, click the Reload button. Then click on System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager, enter your password if prompted to and search for flashplugin-nonfree. Right click on flashplugin-nonfree, choose to install the plugin and click on the Apply button. Once the plugin has been installed, close Synaptic and open Firefox go to the website for your radio station. Click on the "Listen Live!" button and you should be listening to your radio station via the web.

Hi :)

Ahhhh, great :) I usually get the Flash player from the Adobe website. Sometimes it has been more up-to-date or just better than the one in the repositories but sometimes the version in the repos is better. Usually i would recommend getting all software from the Ubuntu repos but in this case it's not always the best version.

I would take Book 'em Dano 's advice first and try the one in the repos :)

System - Administration - Synaptic

then either search tool to find "flash player" and scroll through to find "non-free" or "adobe". It is free (as in free beer) but not Free as in "Freedom of Information".

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
