cannot get my cd/dvd tray to open

I am new to linux and ubuntu and have installed a dvd player but i cannot get the cd/dvd tray to open. i have to restart and then open it. it will not even open with the the paperclip in the little hole but makes a very disturbing noise until i restart it. what am i missing? help!!! please!!!!

if you run:

sudo lshw -C disk; sudo lshw -C drive

You will see the device names for the drive

You can then use:

sudo eject /dev/sr0

(for example, yours may be different)

Or you can try with a needle and try to push the button that is on the front of your cd/dvd drive

Have you ensured that if it is an IDE drive, and it is on the same cable as your hard disk, the hard disk is set as a master device and the DVD drive as a slave device, or if it is on its own cable that it is set as a master device?

All drives are IDE ;)
