Supposing you have two separated hard disk and not different partitions on the same hard disk.

The simply way is to put the free hard-disk as primary using bios settings (then also disable the Win Hard disk to be sure it remain untouched) and install Ubuntu on it selecting use entire disk when asked.

In this mode you will have a standalone Ubuntu hard-disk to booting from (by changing bios setting every time).

You can also move this hard disk to a diffrent pc and Ubuntu will works...

To get best use the Ubuntu 8.10 desktop standard 32 bits...

Hope this helps

It's not enough to disable by BIOS in order to install as a standalone dual boot, you also need to physically disconnect too.
Hope this help, let me know.

Can you help with this problem?
